Robbers Take Jewelry Worth $4.8M in Ritz Hotel Heist

3 men were captured; 2 others are at large.

Jewelry thieves wielding hatchets stole millions of dollars worth of jewlry from the Ritz hotel in Paris, Agence France Presse reported.

Five men are believed to have been involved. Three have been taken into custody, while two others remain at large, police said.

At about 6:30 p.m. local time, the thieves broke windows at the hotel and took “several million euros” worth of jewelry, which amounts to several million dollars worth. CNN reports that the figure is thought to be at least $4.8 million.

The jewelry cases were located on the ground floor. AFP quoted a police source saying that “world-famous jewelers display their jewelry at the Ritz.”

The two men who escaped got away with the jewels, CNN reported. They reportedly fled by scooter.
