Thief in Burqa Steals $800,000 in Jewelry from Piaget Store in Manhattan

A man in a burqa-like garment stole $800,000 in jewelry and watches from a Piaget store in the Hudson Yards neighborhood of Manhattan.

The theft took place just before 4 p.m. Sunday, the New York Post reports.

Police say the man asked to see a necklace. As the employee showed him the piece, he realized the customer was holding a watch.

Upon being questioned about the timepiece, the suspicious man sprayed toward the employee with a spray bottle.

The thief then made off with the necklace and two watches. The total value of the merchandise was $800,600, the Post reports.

Police have had trouble identifying the culprit “because the head covering — typically worn by women in some Muslim cultures — concealed most of the man’s face,” according to the Post.
