Accutron Celebrates 60th Anniversary

(PRESS RELEASE) First unveiled in 1960 to universal acclaim, Accutron, known as the world’s first fully electronic watch, has been declared one of the most important innovations in the history of watchmaking. Now, 60 years later with the same passion for innovation and groundbreaking technology, Accutron introduces a new historical advancement in timekeeping – the world’s first timepieces powered by electrostatic energy.

To celebrate the 60th Anniversary of Accutron, the brand unveils a Limited Edition 18K solid gold version of their new Spaceview 2020 timepiece. Recreating the stunning visual impact of the original open dial design and the exact-same signature green accents with the all-new electrostatic energy movement, Accutron commemorates the Spaceview’s place in avant-garde timepiece history.

This new style, limited to 60 pieces, boasts an 18k solid yellow gold case and bezel on a luxurious black grained leather strap with an 18K solid yellow gold three piece buckle, retailing for $19,600.

“60 years since the first fully electronic watch was created, we are proud to reintroduce Accutron as its own brand in its own right,” says Jeffrey Cohen, president Citizen Watch America. “The new Limited Edition Spaceview 2020 featured in solid gold is our way of paying homage to a historical landmark achievement and immediate design sensation.”

After a decade of dedicated research and development, the proprietary Accutron movement powered by electrostatic energy is created by twin turbines that rotate as a result of human motion at incredible speeds between two electrodes affixed to the movement. The energy, stored in a capacitor, powers two motors; a world’s first electrostatic motor fueling the fluid second hand and a step motor powering the hour and minute hands. Both motors are synchronized through integrated circuits to provide accuracy to +/- 5 seconds a month.
