Jewel Thief Lived Large, Bought Maserati with Robbery Proceeds — and Other Crime News

He faces decades in prison.

A Texas man has been convicted of 25 criminal counts related to a series of jewelry-store robberies.

Prosecutors said Marvin Lewis of Round Rock used the money from the robberies to find a lavish lifestyle, which included taking pictures with Hollywood stars and buying items such as a Maserati and a Bentley, the Austin American-Statesman reports.

According to the newspaper, the crimes “are related to robbery, money laundering and unlawful use of a gun.” Lewis awaits sentencing in U.S. Western District Court, where he could be ordered to spend 57 years to life behind bars.

Stores he was accused of targeting included two Jared the Galleria of Jewelry stores in Austin as well as Marc Robinson Jewelers. In all he was accused of being involved in 14 robberies or attempted robberies in Texas and Ohio.

Authorities said Lewis didn’t enter the stores himself but instead worked through an accomplice.

Lewis, who apparently enjoyed attending Hollywood award show parties, has been photographed with a wide variety of celebrities, from Ed Sheeran to Madonna.

Police say burglars stole over $100,000 worth of jewelry from JC Penney in Tucson, AZ. Henry Lopez, 18, has been arrested in connection with the crime, the Arizona Daily Star reports. Authorities are still looking for a second man believed to have been involved in the burglary.

Authorities have gone public with surveillance footage of a June 17 burglary at Roof Jewelers in Richland County, SC, WIS-TV reports. Sheriff’s deputies say someone broke through the front door and stole a case that contained jewelry worth $4,000, and they’re looking for help identifying the suspect. Watch the video.
