Jewelers Row Tenants Get Eviction Notices

Eviction notices have been issued to some tenants of Philadelphia’s Jewelers’ Row, the Associated Press reports.

They’re being asked to leave the premises by May 31. The purpose of the evictions is to make way for a planned condominium tower, according to the report.

Jewelers and preservationists have opposed plans by developer Toll Bros., resulting in some changes to the design. Court challenges to the plans, however, have been unsuccessful.

The area is the oldest diamond district in the U.S., but it is not listed on the Philadelphia Register of Historic Places, the Associated Press reports.

WPVI-TV quoted jeweler Jane Theis saying, “All my work, all my everything that is my life. In the same studio for 30 years and all of a sudden 60 days to vacate.”

Several jewelers received eviction notices, and others are concerned that they’re next in line, the news station reports.
