Judge the Jewels: Double Mama Diamond Drama at the Beckham-Peltz Wedding

The sighting: Nicola Peltz and Brooklyn Beckham recently tied the knot and we simply must discuss the lovebirds’ mothers’ wedding day jewelry. Because what do two very fancy women wear to see their very fancy children marry each other? Enormous diamonds.

The jewels: Let’s start with Victoria Beckham’s magnificent necklace. According to Vogue, she’s wearing a 21.5 carat pear-shaped diamond, mounted in a platinum collet setting on a necklace made from antique French and English chains with figa suspending the pendant. The pear diamond was a gift from her husband on the day of their son Brooklyn’s christening, newly repurposed in honor of his wedding.

The erstwhile Posh Spice’s 20+ carat pear would be a showstopper in almost any situation … except that the Mother of the Bride, Claudia Peltz, showed up with much more firepower.

Peltz’s earrings are a cascade of large round diamonds that jewelry designer Susannah Lovis told Elle Magazine could be worth “$250,000 up to several million dollars depending on the cut and clarity.” But even the earrings pale before her necklace: an absolutely enormous pear-shaped diamond suspended from three rows of additional diamonds.

There’s a thrilling theory floating around social media about this necklace, as reported by jewelry aficionado Who Wore What Jewels and researched by Rafael Gluz of the Instagram account @z.ulg. Peltz’s pear diamond bears a striking resemblance to the Star of the East, a 94.78 carat, D-color pear diamond once owned by Evalyn Walsh McLean, the famously ill-fated owner of the Hope Diamond.

The Star of the East returned to Harry Winston after McLean’s death, but its location has been unknown since it changed hands in a private sale. The 1984 book Harry Winston: The Ultimate Jeweler features an image of the Star of the East in its most recent Harry Winston setting … and that photo happens to look exactly like the treasure gracing Peltz’s neck at this wedding.

Is Peltz really wearing the Star of the East? We don’t know for sure, but I do think it’s possible.

What do we think? The family backstory behind Beckham’s diamond drop is very sweet and the possible provenance of Peltz’s staggering center stone gives me a thrill all the way down to my jewelry-loving toes. Yes, it’s a lot, but I see no point in famous people existing if they’re not willing to delight me by going all out on their jewelry.

Judgement: 17/10 for dazzling diamond deliciousness!! Good work, Beckham-Peltz mamas.
