The sighting: Model and Actress Emily Ratajkowski, whose toi-et-moi engagement ring sparked the recent toi-et-moi resurgence, revealed on Instagram that she had her iconic engagement ring converted into two “Divorce Rings” after the end of her marriage.
The jewels: Ratajkowski’s Divorce Rings were designed and created by Alison Lou, the NYC jeweler responsible for the model/actress’s original engagement ring.
The original engagement ring featured a large princess cut diamond and a large pear-shaped diamond, estimated to have a total diamond weight of around 5 carats.
The pear-shaped diamond has been repurposed into a pinky ring, with the stone set at a diagonal tilt atop a gold yellow gold band, while the princess cut diamond is now flanked by trapezoid shaped side stones on a separate gold band.
The trends: In an interview with Vogue, Ratajkowski explained: “I don’t think a woman should be stripped of her diamonds just because she’s losing a man,” adding “The rings represent my own personal evolution.”
An empowering reason to repurpose jewelry from a painful divorce and embrace one’s new life with fresh jewelry, joyfully and without shame? This has ENORMOUS trend potential.
When this story broke, it was all over my own social media feeds in minutes. People absolutely love this idea and it’s not going to go away.
What do we think? Divorce is common, but it is still very painful and often carries a lot of shame – shame that always seems to end up on the ex-wife’s shoulders, at least in heterosexual divorces. The idea that post-divorce life is a beautiful new beginning that deserves to be celebrated by transforming one’s engagement ring into new jewelry is very powerful and I am a huge fan of the message it sends.
Repurposing one’s wedding jewelry after a divorce isn’t a brand new concept (despite the fact that Alison Lou has now trademarked the term) but doing it loudly and proudly does feel new, and I think it’s wonderful.
