The sighting: Actress Lucy Liu recently attended the Academy Museum Gala in Los Angeles. She chose a vibrant purple Miss Sohee gown for the occasion, paired with some absolutely glorious Margot McKinney jewels.
The jewels: Lucy Liu is wearing some spectacular Margot McKinney creations. The showstopper here is the necklace: it’s Margot McKinney’s Lillian collier.
Margot McKinney’s Lillian collier is made from 18K white and yellow gold and features a significant and rare 41.93 carat Australian black opal at its center, surrounded an exceptional array of gemstones arranged in foliate and bow patterns, including tanzanite, rubellite, mandarin garnet, yellow beryl, peridot, green tourmaline, citrine and kunzite.
Liu paired the gorgeous necklace with a Margot McKinney ring with a large cushion-cut rubellite of 22.24 carats surrounded by 34 round brilliant-cut diamonds, pink sapphires, Ceylon sapphires and tsavorite garnets.

The trends: Recent red carpets have indicated that celebrities are ready for necklaces to be a little shorter and more colorful, and this beauty definitely supports that!
What do we think? Why oh why do celebrities ever attend events with bare clavicles when necklaces like this exist in the world?
This necklace is SO FABULOUS. The colors, the bows, the florals! It’s a celebration of life and color and joy in every possible way.
I also love that Liu and her stylist chose to accessorize this brightly colored gown with colored gemstones, instead of going for the easy route of understated white diamonds.
I often lament when celebrities wear statement necklaces with no earrings and have frequently commented that even a pair of diamond studs are better than bare lobes…and that’s exactly what Liu has done here! But…does it work? I think they may be too small. It kind of feels like she forgot to change out her daytime diamond studs when she got dressed for the event.
I heartly support the avoidance of bare lobes, but I have to admit that I think larger colored gemstone studs or colored gem and diamond clusters would have been better here.
Judgement: 30/10 for a mind-blowing necklace.
