hat do animal skins, ancient armor and rock ‘n roll have in common? They’re all inspirations of Singaporean designer Lynn Ban’s stunning line of jewelry.

I haven’t been so pleasantly taken aback by a jewelry collection since I first laid eyes on the “naïve side/wild side”-inspired pieces of Atelier Minyon a few years ago. Ban’s jewelry appeared in INDESIGN’s May Couture preview, and I ran across the jewelry again while putting together our “100 most visible brands” story, where the fledgling brand placed 57th due to its popularity with fashion editors. I also discovered that her line is carried by respected retailers with a keen eye for up-and-coming talent, including Twist in Portland and Reinhold Jewelers in San Juan.

Motifs for the line include pistols, electric guitars, barbed wire and scarab beetles, all created in a style that is hard-edged yet feminine. The jewelry is smooth, sleek and above all, arresting. It’s the reason that it-girls like Rihanna, Katy Perry and Demi Lovato are fans of the collection and the work is being shown in Vogue, Elle, W and more. Rihanna has even referred to Ban as her “fairy godmother” on Instagram and wears her pieces both in private and in public.

Ban studied art history and literature at Cornell and New York University and also studied art history for two years at the Sorbonne in Paris. So she knows traditional approaches backward and forward, but chooses to follow an ultra-modern, subversive direction with her own line, which launched in 2011.

If you’re new to Lynn Ban’s jewelry, check out her collection at www.lynnban.com, and prepare to be wowed.
