After suffering through this dark, unappetizing year of Marsala, the gentle duo of Rose Quartz (pale pink) and Serenity (aka periwinkle blue) is the palate cleanser we all need. The combo looks a little like the interior of my local Buy Buy Baby, but the pairing creates “balance between a warmer embracing rose tone and the cooler tranquil blue, reflecting connection and wellness as well as a soothing sense of order and peace,” according to the color authority.

It’s possible that news of the Color of the Year won’t mean much to the jewelry selling or consuming crowd. Retailers tell me often that gemstones in easy shades of pink and blue are consistent top sellers. And Pantone doesn’t decree from on high what will be popular so much as digest what’s happening in the zeitgeist. But Pantone’s authority and easily digestible choices might convince color averse shoppers who usually stick with diamonds to take a walk on the wild side with Rose Quartz or Serenity.
