THE GRAMMYS ARE known for over-the-top fashion and jewels. This year, there was a mix of elegant and elaborate, and Taylor Swift’s earrings leaned more toward the enormous.
Swift looked stunning in her midnight blue Roberto Cavalli crop top and long skirt, a nod to her song “Midnight Rain.” She accessorized with only a few pieces of jewelry: one pair of earrings and two rings. Although she took a streamlined approach to the amount of jewels, she went all out with the size of the pieces. Her earrings by Lorraine Schwartz were created with diamonds, Paraiba tourmalines and purple sapphires. To call them outsized statement earrings would be an understatement. But it was the Grammys, and if you are going to go over-the-top, this is the event for it. Her rings were also from Schwartz: a purple sapphire and white diamond inlay ring and another purple sapphire ring.
I believe that after years of the ear party with dainty earrings climbing up the ear in all different styles, bigger earrings are making a comeback. However, the trend will be toward those that don’t weight heavily on the lobes. The shapes and style were on the mark in this case, but the larger earrings that will be worn in the “real world” might be a quarter to a third of the size. Additionally, we will see a variety of styles. Another that stuck out: the dazzling, drippy diamond hoops by Messika that Cardi B wore. These may well show up in a smaller version.
It’s safe to say though that Swift was one of the best dressed and bejeweled stars of the evening, and she definitely offered designers, retailers and jewelry enthusiasts inspiration for earrings to come.
