The Guy Who Discovered the World’s Largest Diamond Nearly Freaked Out When He First Saw It

“At first I wanted to scream.”

Tiroyaone Mathaba somehow managed to keep his adrenaline in check after the 27-year-old sorter who works for Lucara Diamond Corp. discovered the world’s largest diamond, explains Rapaport, citing a report from The Daily Telegraph. The article says that he found the gem – which weighs 1,109 carats and was dubbed Lesedi La Rona – while examining sand and rock produced by large diamond recovery machines. “At first I wanted to scream,” Mathaba told the Telegraph. “Then I said in a low hoarse voice ‘God, it’s a diamond! It’s a diamond, it’s a big diamond!’”

Sotheby’s will auction the diamond in London on June 29.
