(PRESS RELEASE) ZIONSVILLE, IN — In response to the reversal of Roe v. Wade last June, Zionsville-based store Robert Goodman Jewelers will host a jewelry and art exhibit meant to ignite conversations surrounding reproductive rights.
The Plan B Art Project will be at Robert Goodman Jewelers this June and July with an opening reception on Friday, June 2 from 4 to 8 p.m. Exhibition curator Shauna Blythe Burke will be present, and there will be food and drinks from Shapiro’s Delicatessen.
The Plan B Art Project is a collective art project bringing together 70+ contemporary metal and jewelry artists to call attention to the current state of a person’s right to a legal and safe abortion. Burke invited artists to transform a cast silver amphora bottle or use their own interpretation of Plan B as a starting point to create a wearable or sculptural object. The Amphora bottle symbolizes vintage pharmaceutical bottles and historical methods used to end pregnancies through abortifacient herbs and poisons.
Burke said, “Through jewelry, you can create intimacy and conversation. We’re at a moment in society where conversations need to be had. There are elements of symbolism and storytelling in jewelry, so this exhibit has been a great way to tell an important story during a scary time.”
That same desire to spark conversation and make a statement is the motivation for business owners Robert and Rose-Marie Goodman to welcome the Plan B Art Project.
Robert Goodman said, “We’re in a conservative industry for the most part, and here is a group of 70+ independent designers and artisans who are creating jewelry and art to make a statement. We want to be part of that statement. It’s the designers and makers who are really stepping up to the plate and saying it is unacceptable to take a woman’s right away from her.”
The Plan B Art Project comes to Zionsville after being in galleries across the US, most recently in New Orleans. More than 50 pieces will be on display and for sale at Robert Goodman Jewelers. Three of the shop’s partners will have jewelry in the collection: Judi Powers, Russell Jones, and Karin Jacobson.
No stranger to philanthropy and actions that reflect their progressive point of view on social issues, the Goodman’s believe in a human model, not a business model. Proceeds from the exhibit will go to Planned Parenthood of Indiana and All-Options Pregnancy Resource Center in Bloomington.
“We are absolutely pro-choice,” said Robert Goodman. “Being pro-choice means that we support a woman’s right to decide and a woman’s autonomy over her body. The Dodd decision overturning Roe v. Wade took that right away. We are doing our part to support organizations fighting for a woman’s rights.”
