World’s ‘Most Valuable Piece of Jade’ Unearthed

Miners have discovered what’s being called the “most valuable piece of jade” in the world, with an estimated value of over $170 million, the Daily Mail reports.

The jadeite stone was found in Myanmar and weighs approximately 175 tons. Its dimensions are colossal at 18 feet long, 18 feet wide and 9 feet high.

The Daily Mail reports that the stone’s worth is “the highest for any single piece of raw jade.” The jade is likely headed for China, where it will be made into sculptures and jewelry, including necklaces and bracelets.

One of the miners, Sao Min, was quoted as saying: “We thought we had won the lottery. But this belongs to the country. It is in honor of our leaders.” The discovery was made in Kachin State.

The jade industry makes up about 50 percent of Myanmar’s GDP. The Daily Mail notes that it amounts to a $50 billion industry.
