Thollot Diamonds & Fine Jewelry of Thornton, CO, owned by Troy and Joy Thollot, won second place in the “big cool” division of 2020 America’s Coolest Stores contest. The $1.2 million renovation of their 4,900-square-foot showroom in 2019 was inspired by the tagline “Raise the Bar.” Raise the bar refers to the couple’s career-long effort to strive for excellence, but also applies to the theme of the store’s interior design, which includes a “Pour Your Heart Into It” jewelry casting bar, a custom design jewelry bar, a jewelry repair bar and an actual Colorado-style bar for celebrations. They call the shopping experience the Thollot Bar Hop.

The backlit bar at night extends an invitation. The surface of the bar and high-top tables are made of wood from pullman cars, which transported Coors beer from Colorado to California in the 1800s.

The cash wrap’s image of mountains adds to the sense of place this store invokes.

Girl Scouts are invited to work on their jewelry badges at Thollot, where they enjoy a behind-the-scenes look at what being a jeweler really means.

The bridal bar reflects the store’s bar theme while also creating a dramatic architectural element.

Bridal booths provide comfortable seating and a private experience, while creating a casual, bar-like ambience.

Cases are configured and designed to facilitate side by side selling.

Windows are backlit by the bar lights for after-hours advertising.

The Thollots were inspired by Colorado distilleries, breweries, museums and 1800s gold mines to handcraft a store design that would resonate with their target clients. They used reclaimed wood from a historic local gold mine to accent the interior ceiling.

An artful combination of curves and right angles add visual interest.

Troy and Joy Thollot show off their expansive bridal cases. The couple met when they were both 18 and working as bench jeweler apprentices.

The store’s interior includes a mural depicting a 19th century Colorado gold mine.

The casting bar and repair bar fit the “Raise the Bar” theme. Clients are invited to pour the gold into their own custom rings as part of the “Pour Your Heart Into It” custom jewelry design experience. Master jewelers guide each client through the design, creation and centrifugal casting process.
