Auction Houses Sell Antique Jewelry at Premium Prices

Fortune reports that noteworthy pieces of estate jewelry are fetching top prices at auction houses like Sotheby’s, whose jewelry sales are up 46 percent since 2011. The article says mid-century Van Cleef & Arpels and 1970s Bulgari are highly sought-after these days, as are Art Deco pieces by Cartier. Prospective buyers should be attentive to authenticity and buy from reputable dealers and major auction houses like Sotheby’s and Christie’s. On Sept. 22, Sotheby’s will begin a two day “Important Jewels” sale, featuring an 84.90-carat yellow Ceylon sapphire by Van Cleef & Arpels that is expected to bring in as much as $200,000.
