Gem Legacy Launches Emergency COVID-19 Fund

(PRESS RELEASE)Gem Legacy, a 501c3 nonprofit organization dedicated to colored gemstone mining communities, has launched an emergency fund to feed 256 kids who are at risk of malnutrition because current school suspension in Tanzania and Kenya due to COVID-19 precautions has left them without government-sponsored lunch on a daily basis. $25 feeds one child lunch every day for one month.

The 256 are those who have been identified by trusted allies of Gem Legacy as “at-risk” of malnutrition during this time of suspended government-funded school lunches due to severe poverty in their home life. Kids at Mwatate Children’s Home in Mwatate, Kenya and Sanawari Primary School in Arusha, Tanzania will be supported.

Sanawari Primary School feeds its 1,500 students, age 5-14, lunch on a daily basis. Parents of at-risk children will be notified that food is available for them to pick up at the school. The school administrators will monitor the food distribution to maintain proper social distancing etiquette.

“Gem Legacy is committed to adapting to current needs and we are glad to take this opportunity in the midst of this world crisis to give back to those who are affected most at the source of gems by the COVID-19 situation,” says Roger Dery, Gem Legacy founder. “What an opportunity for the jewelry industry to work together and just a little contribution goes a long way!”
