INTERGEM Presents: The Long Night of the Gemstones

(PRESS RELEASE)IDAR-OBERSTEIN — Raising awareness of the uniqueness and expertise of the jewelry and gemstone city Idar-Oberstein amongst exhibitors at and visitors to the INTERGEM fair – this is the goal of the “Long Night of the Gemstones”, which is set to take place for the first time on Saturday, 24 September, in the scope of INTERGEM 2022. On this evening it will be possible to explore seven unique places from 7 pm until midnight.

Alongside the tourist highlights relating to gemstones and jewelry, such as the German Gemstone Museum, the German Mineral Museum, the Weiherschleife Grinding and the Steinkaulenberg gemstone mine, the Industrial Monument Jakob Bengel will also be opening its doors, providing a highly interesting presentation of how fashion jewelry was made up to the 1930s. The museum is open until midnight, with entry free of charge. A visit to the German Gemmological Association and the Department of Gemstones and Jewellery of Trier University of Applied Sciences gives visitors the opportunity to appreciate the importance of training and apprenticeships when it comes to acquiring the necessary skills for stones and jewelry, and the impact that these institutions have worldwide.

Free shuttle buses are on hand to enable interested exhibitors and trade visitors, as well as locals, to gain an impression of the seven institutions in a relaxed atmosphere. In addition to free admission and tours, live music, regional beverages and culinary treats will also be offered. A visit to the Steinkaulenberg and the Industrial Museum Jakob Bengel requires pre-registration at the INTERGEM website, as these two institutions can only be practicably visited in the scope of a guided tour. All other attractions can be chosen at will and visited throughout the evening.

The Long Night of the Gemstones was presented to visitors and the press for the first time at an opening event on 23 June in the Göttenbach Aula. The video trailer for the event attracted particular interest and the Long Night of the Gemstones was well received by all those present. The Long Night of the Gemstones impressively demonstrates the unique body of expertise accumulated by the Idar-Oberstein region over the course of the centuries, with this expertise continuing to be maintained and passed on today by the German Gemmological Association and the Department of Gemstones and Jewellery of Trier University of Applied Sciences.

The program of the individual institutions, the video trailer and a roadmap to create your own evening program can be found at here.
