Judge the Jewels: Blake Lively Brings Gorgeous Gilded Glamour in a Custom Tiara and Earrings at the Met Gala

The sighting: Met Gala Co-Chair Blake Lively kicked off the red carpet in spectacular style with the reveal of her Versace gown’s secret color-changing ability. (It’s amazing! Check out the video here if you haven’t seen it yet).

But as much as I love her dress, it is the actress’s Lorraine Schwartz jewels that we must discuss.

The jewels: Celeb-favorite jeweler Schwartz custom-made Lively’s Met Gala tiara to match her remarkable gown. The staggering design features approximately 100 carats of nude and bronze-colored diamonds in copper accentuated with a row of vivid Paraiba tourmalines.

Lively explained during a red carpet interview with The Cut that her tiara, like her dress, was designed as a tribute to New York City. The tiara has seven tiers because the Statue of Liberty’s crown has seven rays, which represent the seven seas and continents, and therefore freedom and inclusivity. The tiara’s 25 diamonds are an homage to the 25 windows in the Statue of Liberty’s crown.

The earrings, also by Schwartz, feature 90 carats of nude diamonds and two large and striking fan-shaped mint green Colombian emeralds.

What do we think? Tiaras are my catnip, and I am just as delighted by this one as you would expect. Custom to match a dress? Copper and Paraiba? So much fun, and so interesting! I don’t love the repeated use of “nude” to describe diamonds (haven’t we learned by now that nude isn’t a universal descriptor and shouldn’t be used as one?) but the design is a delight.

I’m a little less enthused about the earrings. I love the emeralds, but the color combination doesn’t quite sing for me, and the shape feels unwieldy. That said, the Met Gala is the best possible place to go big stylistically, and I give Lively major credit for swinging for the fences like this.

Judgement: 12/10! I may not love the earrings, but this still deserves heaps of credit for magnificent attention to the theme, admirable levels of pizazz, and the public wearing of a tiara.
