Judge the Jewels: Latto Brings Big Hoop Energy to the BET Awards

The sighting: Rapper Latto accepted the award for Best New Artist at the 2022 BET Awards wearing a truly remarkable pair of hoop earrings.

The jewels: Latto paired her Mugler dress with a pair of absolutely gargantuan hoop earrings and a one-arm stack of dramatic clear bracelets.

The hoops are white and they’re relatively slender, but their circumference is so enormous that they reach all the way the signer’s waist. Latto had to loop her arms through the hoops and let them hang next to her sides, rather leaving the earrings free to bounce around atop her elbows.

The bracelets appear to be Lucite or similar, but they’re so overshadowed by the earrings that I keep forgetting that they’re even there.

I haven’t been able to track down a definitive credit for Latto’s BET Awards jewelry, but the rest of her outfit is Mugler, so the hoops and bracelets are most likely Mugler as well.

The trends: Hoop earrings have been going strong in recent years, especially hoops that are a twist on the classic in some way (unexpected shapes, materials, textures, etc). Reimagining the iconic hoop continues to be a popular look, especially for summer party jewelry.

The extreme scale of this exact pair may only be relevant to celebrities on red carpets, but don’t discount the power of the overall hoop moment.

What do we think? Latto’s hoops were SO BIG that one of them actually fell off when she took the stage to accept her award for Best New Artist. Latto gave her acceptance speech with one giant hoop slung loosely over her shoulder like the shoulder strap of a handbag. It was pretty funny, I cannot lie, but she handled it with poise.

One might conclude that the fact that not even a celebrity can wear these earrings successfully for the length of an awards show appearance means that they’re truly too big to be wearable, but I still think that Latto’s giant hoops were a fantastic fashion moment.

They’re extreme, yes, but they’re perfectly suited to a young rapper celebrating her meteoric rise at the BET awards, especially because Latto’s breakout hit was a song called “Big Energy.” (NSFW warning: the song is not about earrings.)

Judgement: 14/10! An appropriately theatrical choice for a theatrical moment.
