Judge the Jewels: Sofia Carson’s Incomplete Emerald Ensemble

The sighting: Singer and actress Sofia Carson attended the 2023 Oscars in an ethereal white gown and emeralds. She received a lot of praise for the look on social media, but I have notes on her styling choices.

The jewels: Carson is wearing a spectacular emerald necklace from Chopard. The piece is made of Fairmined-certified white gold and features seven octagonal emeralds totaling 122.49 carats, accentuated with 92.57 carats of diamonds.

This necklace is wildly beautiful. It has a classic Hollywood vibe, but the delicacy of the diamond details between the emeralds feels very modern.

The trends: Emeralds were one of the standout trends of the 2023 Academy Awards. This was one of several emerald and diamond statement necklaces we saw during the evening, but – in my humble opinion – this was the prettiest one.

There’s another trend happening too: companies using high profile events to showcase their brand’s sustainability/responsibility efforts. The fact that this necklace is Fairmined-certified gold is noteworthy, as is the fact that Chopard is making sure to tell media outlets about it.

What do we think? This necklace is staggeringly beautiful. The emeralds are luscious, the diamond swags are opulent, the luxury is plentiful and delicious.

However: it kills me that she isn’t wearing any other jewelry. No earrings, no bracelet, not even any rings!

It’s even more blatant because the actress’s hair is up – those are some extremely prominent bare ears.

I think the stylist must have wanted to let the emerald necklace be the star of the show, but I find the lack of other jewelry to be so jarring that the whole look feels unfinished, like Carson lost track of time getting ready and fled to the event without the rest of her accessories.

Can you imagine how much better this would have been with a pair of diamond cluster studs and an emerald and diamond ring? I want a bolder lip and colorful manicure too, but that’s outside my purview here.

Judgement: 8/10 because that necklace is glorious but I can’t forgive the bare lobes.
