A jury says Tiffany & Co. deserves $5.5 million from Costco Wholesale Corp.
The federal jury in New York was tasked with determining the appropriate amount after a judge found that Costco was committing a trademark violation, according to U.S. News & World Report.
The figure takes into account profits that Costco made from the sales.
Representatives from Costco and Tiffany declined to comment, according to the publication.
Tiffany began its litigation against Costco three years ago, claiming that the retailer was touting rings as “Tiffany” when they were not.
Costco had defended itself by asserting that “Tiffany” is a generic term for a type of setting.
In 2015, a judge found Costco liable for trademark infringement and trademark counterfeiting, the Seattle Times notes.
The $5.5 million may not be all that Costco will have to pay. The jury was still deciding on an amount for punitive damages.
