Kroger to Close Dozens of Jewelry Stores Permanently

Kroger Co. plans to close many of its Fred Meyer Jewelers stores throughout the U.S.

Seventy-one Fred Meyer locations that operate within Kroger Marketplace stores will close by the end of May, the Cincinnati Business Courier reports.

The grocer said in a statement: “As part of our ongoing portfolio review, we have evaluated the business performance of Fred Meyer Jewelers in our Marketplace stores. We have made the decision to bring more focus to our vision of service America with food inspiration and uplift.”

Fred Meyer Jewelers will continue its presence in the Pacific Northwest and Utah, in select malls, and online, Kroger stated.

Cincinnati-based Kroger operates 2,757 supermarkets and multi-department stores in 35 states and Washington, DC. Before the planned Fred Meyer Jewelers closures, it maintained 242 jewelry stores.
