Newly Unearthed Stone May Be ‘World’s 3rd-Largest Diamond’

A 1,098 carat stone found in Botswana early this month may be the world’s third-largest diamond.

It was unearthed by Debswana Diamond Co. at the Jwaneng mine, Bloomberg reports.

It’s not yet clear how much the stone may be worth. Diamond Trading Co. Botswana is conducting a valuation that should be completed within a few weeks, according to Bloomberg.

The BBC notes that the second-largest diamond, the Lesedi La Rona, sold for $53 million in 2017.

Debswana spokeswoman Rachel Mothibatsela said: “Debswana will work with the government of the Republic of Botswana and De Beers to value and sell the diamond to ensure it returns maximum benefit for the people of Botswana.”

Debswana is a partership between De Beers Plc and Botswana.
