Jewelry has come full circle to include current takes on themes from the past. In one trend, unique gems, carved stones and beads hark back to the late ’60s and ‘70s love beads. Although fancy cuts and faceted stones can be found in many a jewelry collection, there is also a chic bohemian take on color and cuts of gemstones this season.

We saw many of the trends in jewelry appear on the ready-to-wear spring/summer 2023 runway shows. Here is a culmination of the bohemian bead/gemstone trend in all its glory mixed together at UlLa Johnson.

Bead It

Although chains in all incarnations are still going strong, meaningful and symbolic pendants are meant to be worn either layered with cut gemstone beads or as add-on charms and medallions.

Numerous stones, from translucent to opaque, are being cut into beaded necklaces — some as fun and playful as the candy necklaces we wore (and then ate) when we were young and others with a casual sophistication. Many have a gold clasp that will hold one or multiple charms.

The Bold and the Beautiful

Cabochon cuts, inlays of beads that represent protective symbols, and gems that grow out of the ground with an artistry that relies on Mother Nature — they’re all back in full force as we head into the new season. These pieces tend to be bigger than the charms we have been wearing, and they’re meant to be worn alone on a necklace or layered and graduated with the aforementioned beads.
