Jeweler Refuses to Honor Warranty After Price of Gold Increases

A dose of watchdog journalism helped the business change its mind.

A woman who had repeated problems with a gold chain she bought from Schubach Jewelers in Utah was denied a replacement even though her warranty entitled her to one, KUTV reports. The article says that she had the chain repaired more than six times, which qualified her for a replacement under the terms of her warranty. But when she requested a new chain, the store told her that it would cost more because the price of gold had increased.

Fortunately, the woman called the KUTV news station, which took the initiative of calling Schubach’s corporate office to find out what in the Sam Hill was going on. The jeweler, naturally, backtracked on its stance and honored the warranty.
