Jewelry With a Healthy Attitude

IT’S A TRICKY proposition to sell a product that promotes a cause. And plenty of bystanders are quick to cast stones when the manufacturing practices behind purportedly ethical goods don’t seem to live up to their good intentions.  With her new collection of sterling silver jewelry, Susan Rockefeller aims to sidestep that pitfall.

The film director’s latest effort explores sustainable food practices, and the accompanying jewelry line, Food For Thought, Food For Life, shares its name and theme.  The range of sterling silver jewelry—along with a few accessories—features motifs, like bees, honeycombs…even a pitchfork, that touch on elements of healthy agriculture. It’s the latest effort from the Protect What Is Precious collection, which donates a portion of its profits to environmental organization %1 for the Planet.

To keep the jewelry’s manufacturing in line with her eco-conscious ethos, Rockefeller teamed with Sabin Metal Corporation to supply the collection with recycled metals, and she made the trip to its North Dakota facility to see the business in action. Sabin retrieves precious metals from expected sources, like electronics, and unexpected ones, like pharmaceuticals. (Yes, your prescriptions contain precious metals. too.)

“The jewelry is meant to be fun to wear, but it’s also a way to inspire consciousness about supporting healthy agriculture and eating,” says Rockefeller. It doesn’t hurt to that she’s vetted the materials in the jewelry’s recipe.
