THIS ISN’T THE first time you have seen the mega music legend, Mariah Carey, dripping in diamonds. At almost every red carpet event, Carey can be spotted in diamond statement pieces — the bold and the beautiful from houses such as Chopard and brands such as Harry Kotlar and Hearts on Fire. Before her short-lived engagement to the Australian billionaire James Packer fizzled out, she dazzled us with the 35-carat emerald cut her good friend and designer Wilfredo Rosado created for the couple.
She continues her diamond diva tradition while being inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame on June 16, 2022. She went all-out glam in a black-and-silver shimmering strapless gown, black gloves and long earrings, what appeared to be a major diamond bracelet, and my favorite piece of all: a lariat that seemed to have a snake head clasping the top of the necklace. The lariat was ultra-long and could be worn wrapped more times around the neck if Carey had wanted to show off her décolletage, but she went for the full effect of the necklace by showing it in its shimmering length. Lariats are trending at the moment, and this particular necklace is alluring and might just inspire more women to find their perfect version of this sensual and often slinky style. Rita Wilson, who was also at the awards presentation dressed in black, wore another version of the lariat in yellow gold that was perfect for any time of the day or night.
We saw lariats at last week’s Couture Show from designers such as Zoe Chicco, Anita Ko, Colette, Melissa Kaye, Jade Trau and many other designers. It’s a trend that has been evolving, and one that I think we will see more of. In the meantime, congrats to Mariah Carey — it is well deserved.
