(PRESS RELEASE) NAJA has a longstanding commitment to supporting gem and jewelry appraisers with industry specific knowledge. As the luxury markets navigate a challenging economic environment, appraisers must understand current market conditions if they are to offer competent and professional service to their clients.

This half-day virtual conference features four webinars specific to price and market trends in the diamond industry and how these trends will influence the work of appraisers. Streamed live Saturday October 19, 2024 from 12:00 to 4:00 PM EST (NY). NAJA members viewing the program will receive 4 hours towards the 16 hours continuing appraisal education requirement. The recording will be available to all registrants for one week, ending at midnight on Saturday, October 26th.

This has been a year of significant upheaval in the global gem and jewelry industry, and frankly luxury in general. Supply and demand issues, changes in consumer attitudes, armed conflicts and deepening financial and political challenges are hamstringing the economic activity in major markets around the world. This has led to a heightened sense of caution for buyers at all levels of the gem market. Yet in this vacuum exists opportunities, where are they and how are influencing the value structure for jewelry? This is the fundamental question for appraisers to understand.

In the context of the most revered gem of all–diamond, the National Association of Jewelry Appraisers has invited veterans of the diamond industry and trade press to share their authoritative insights and put the Market in Perspective.

We will explore current price and supply and demand in the diamond market as well as get a sense of where the market is headed in the commercial side of the natural fancy colored diamond. We will also look at some of the more interesting stories to come out of the diamond trade.

Speakers Include:

You Wouldn’t Cut Your Own Hair. Why Run Your Own Retirement Sale?

After being in business for over a quarter of a century, Wayne Reid, owner of Wayne Jewelers in Wayne, Pennsylvania, decided it was time for a little “me time.” He says, “I’ve reached a point in my life where it’s time to slow down, enjoy a lot of things outside of the jewelry industry. It just seemed to be the right time.” He chose Wilkerson to handle his retirement sale because of their reputation and results. With financial goals exceeded, Reid says he made the right choice selecting Wilkerson to handle the sale. “They made every effort to push our jewelry to the forefront of the showcases,” he says, lauding Wilkerson for their finesse and expertise. Would he recommend them to other jewelers who want to make room for new merchandise, expand their business or like him, decide to call it a day? Absolutely he says, equating trying to do this kind of sale with cutting your own hair. “The results are going to happen but not as well as if you have a professional like Wilkerson do the job for you.”
