Peridot fans can relax, because it’s still an August birthstone, too.

Rapaport reports that Jewelers of America have declared a new birthstone for August: spinel. The article says the introduction is in response to demand from the industry and customers for an expanded birthstone list. “After careful consideration and collaboration with the American Gem Trade Association, spinel was selected for its universal appeal, wide color spectrum and mystical properties,” says JA President and CEO David Bonaparte. Peridot will remain an August birthstone.
