A woman who sold her $32,000 engagement ring benefited from “unjust enrichment,” the Alabama Court of Appeals has ruled.
She received the half-carat diamond ring on Christmas Eve 2018, the Miami Herald reports.
But the couple ended up separating in September 2019. Newsweek reports that the woman called off the wedding and broke up with the man.
The man asked for the ring back, but at that point she had sold it for $10,000 following a job loss, according to the news report. The man filed a legal action in March 2020, claiming that she “knew that the $32,000 engagement ring was a gift conditioned on marrying” him.
He lost the case in Baldwin County Circuit Court in early 2021. Newsweek reports that the court determined the ring was a Christmas gift offered without conditions.
The man appealed, and the appeals court found that the woman didn’t have the right to sell the ring.
The court stated that when an engagement is broken off, “the donor has the right to request the return of the engagement ring and that, when such a request is refused, an unjust enrichment cause of action exists.”
