EBay’s Authenticate service, which launched in the luxury handbags category in 2017 and luxury watches category earlier this year, now includes listings for necklaces, earrings, rings and bracelets, all marked with an “Authenticity Verified” label.

Retail Dive reports that eBay “has worked to entice bigger-spending shoppers with higher priced luxury items, a space also occupied by The RealReal.” Authenticate was developed to help alleviate consumer worries about fake products.

On eBay, Authenticated jewelry items include engagement and wedding bands, loose diamonds and gemstones and fine, vintage and fashion jewelry. The items range in price from $250 to more than $20,000. They are verified by third-party authentication experts and sourced from more than two dozen of eBay’s top-rated sellers, according to the release.

“eBay is home to the largest selection of luxury goods, which includes tens of thousands of jewelry items, fine watches, and rare and designer handbags,” said James Hendy, senior director of eBay Authenticate. “Expanding the eBay Authenticate service provides customers an added layer of trust and confidence as they shop for fine jewelry this holiday and beyond.”

About 50,000 jewelry items are sold per day on eBay, according to the release. One diamond ring is sold per minute.

When There’s No Succession Plan, Call Wilkerson

Bob Wesley, owner of Robert C. Wesley Jewelers in Scottsdale, Ariz., was a third-generation jeweler. When it was time to enjoy life on the other side of the counter, he weighed his options. His lease was nearing renewal time and with no succession plan, he decided it was time to call Wilkerson. There was plenty of inventory to sell and at first, says Wesley, he thought he might try to manage a sale himself. But he’s glad he didn’t. “There’s no way I could have done this as well as Wilkerson,” he says. Wilkerson took responsibility for the entire event, with every detail — from advertising to accounting — done, dusted and managed by the Wilkerson team. “It’s the complete package,” he says of the Wilkerson method of helping jewelers to easily go on to the next phase of their lives. “There’s no way any retailer can duplicate what they’ve done.”
