The sighting: Actress Eva Mendes recently posted an Instagram reel dedicated to a ring that she loves – and she even tagged and credited the designer! But is that the whole story? Let’s investigate.

The jewels: The ring that Eva Mendes is showcasing in her video is the Cast Jewelry Havana Flip Ring. It is an 18K yellow gold ring with emeralds, white agate, chrysoprase, and diamonds (0.9 TCW), listed on Cast Jewelry’s website for $9,750. The design features two reversible elements, an outer ring that can flip between emerald pavé and white agate, and an inner panel that can flip between chrysoprase and white agate to allow four different total configurations.

Mendes also wearing a pair of medium-sized gold hoop earrings, a thick gold band ring, and a lovely gold ring with what looks like a cabochon garnet.

As I researched this Cast Jewelry flip ring, I quickly realized this was not a straightforward case of a celebrity simply posting a jewel that they loved. The Cast Jewelry Instagram revealed that this particular ring was actually created in collaboration with Eva Mendes, and several other Instagram posts with Eva Mendes wearing the ring were labeled as “paid partnership.”

A little Google sleuthing turned up an article explaining that yes, this ring was created as part of a collaboration between Eva Mendes and Cast Jewelry, with 10% of sales going to benefit artistic charity The Art of Elysium.

The trends: Whatever its origin story, this ring is extremely on-trend: it’s a statement ring with green gems and agate that occupies vertical space on the finger and also has a transforming element that allows it to be worn in different ways. It would have fit perfectly into the trend article I just wrote for the June issue of Instore.

What do we think? I wish this situation was a little bit clearer. Eva Mendes was definitely involved in a collaboration with this brand when they created this ring and she has advertised it on her Instagram as part of an advertising campaign in the past…but the post that caught my eye was not labeled as part of an advertising campaign.

Does Mendes love the ring so much that she’s posting about it for free after the ad campaign ended, or did she get sloppy with her sponsored content disclosures? There’s no way to know for sure.

Judgement: 11/10 for a cool ring that may or may not have been shared as part of an ad campaign.

Honoring a Legacy: How Smith & Son Jewelers Exceeded Every Goal With Wilkerson

When Andrew Smith decided to close the Springfield, Massachusetts location of Smith & Son Jewelers, the decision came down to family. His father was retiring after 72 years in the business, and Andrew wanted to spend more time with his children and soon-to-arrive grandchildren. For this fourth-generation jeweler whose great-grandfather founded the company in 1918, closing the 107-year-old Springfield location required the right partner. Smith chose Wilkerson, and the experience exceeded expectations from start to finish. "Everything they told me was 100% true," Smith says. "The ease and use of all their tools was wonderful." The consultants' knowledge and expertise proved invaluable. Smith and his father set their own financial goal, but Wilkerson proposed three more ambitious targets. "We thought we would never make it," Smith explains. "We were dead wrong. We hit our first goal, second goal and third goal. It was amazing." Smith's recommendation is emphatic: "I would never be able to do what they did by myself."
