Retail Organization Partly Blames Amazon and eBay for Shoplifting Crime Wave

Amid reports of an organized retail crime wave in the U.S., the Retail Industry Leaders Association (Arlington County, Va.) is calling for online marketplaces including Amazon, eBay and Facebook to do more to prevent the sale of stolen goods on their platforms, Fox News reports.

In an interview with the outlet, Lisa LaBruno, RILA’s Senior Executive VP of Retail Operations and Innovation, explained: “We can’t arrest and prosecute ourselves out of this problem. The retailers are carrying their weight. They’re doing their level best to address this problem. Law enforcement is doing their best to address this problem. The other key stakeholder in this is the online marketplaces.”

Organized retail crime rings have sprung up across the country, but the shoplifting wave seems to be impacting San Francisco the hardest. Walgreens has shuttered numerous locations in the city, while Target recently cut store hours in order to curb losses.
