The sighting: He was a boy, she was a girl…and you simply must see their ring. Pop-Punk rockers Avril Lavigne and Mod Sun recently made their engagement Instagram-official! The ring has a heart-shaped diamond and a very sweet personal story behind the design.

The jewels: The Sk8er Boi singer’s new bling features a lusciously chunky heart shaped diamond in a pavé diamond setting. The piece is a custom design by Beverly Hills celeb favorite, XIV Karats.
According to Megan Kothari, founder of engagement ring brand AARYAH, “Avril’s heart shaped engagement ring appears to be at least 5 carats. Assuming that the quality of the materials are high, we estimate that this ring could have cost up to $350K.”

Avril Lavigne has a documented history of loving XL diamonds: her ex-husband, Nickleback’s Chad Kroeger, proposed to her in 2012 with a 14-carat pear diamond ring (also from XIV Karats) and followed it up with a 17-carat emerald cut for their first anniversary.

The trends: Heart-shaped diamonds are uncommon, but they do pop up from time to time, especially on the hands of the very wealthy. Lady Gaga’s 2015 engagement ring from Taylor Kinney was similar, although hers was designed by Lorraine Schwartz.

The real trend here is the fact that the ring’s design is a reference to the couple’s personal story. The singer told People Magazine that the diamond’s heart shape is a reference to fact that both Lavigne and Sun were wearing heart-shaped pavé diamond rings when they met. The band is engraved “Hi icon,” because those are the first words he said to her on that first day. It’s very sweet and exactly the kind of heartfelt, personalized customization that current bridal customers love.

What do we think? Big ol’ heart-shaped diamonds aren’t really a stone choice that makes my own ticker go pitter patter, but it’s a pretty stone and I love the story behind the ring’s heart shape.

Judgement: 14/10 for the popstars of my tween years finding happiness, 7/10 because this style isn’t really my cup of tea.
