The sighting: Actress Julianne Moore dazzled on the red carpet at Cannes in a sleek black gown and some truly magnificent emeralds.

The jewels: This extraordinary emerald and diamond necklace is from Bulgari’s newest high jewelry collection, Eden: The Garden of Wonders. The actress also wore an emerald ring from the collection, but that’s harder to see in the photos.

According to Something About Rocks, the platinum necklace features a remarkable oval Colombian emerald of 35.53 carats, 51 pear diamonds, 461 buff-top emeralds, 317 fancy-shape diamonds, and 14.76 carats of pavé-set diamonds. The ring is white gold and features another large Colombian emerald (11.38 TCW) set with fancy shape and pavé-set diamonds.

The trends: Glamorous matched sets are definitely a trend. We’ve seen them creeping back in on red carpets recently and I am here for it.

Is it fair to call emeralds a trend? They’re never really out of style, but I do think they’re having a bit of an upswing at the moment. They’re a personal favorite of mine – so lush and enticing!

What do we think? If I were a redhead like Julianne Moore, I would wear emeralds all the time. (To be honest, it’s only budget, not desire, stopping me from wearing emeralds 24/7 anyway). This is Bulgari at its most iconic and the look is perfect for Cannes, especially with her understated gown and that wide neckline.

My only quibble is that I wish the volume here had been turned up just one additional notch. I want a diamond and emerald hair clip or emerald and diamond cluster stud earrings. Or maybe a bracelet on the arm that doesn’t have the statement ring? It’s a beautifully styled look, and very appropriate for the venue, but still…I want just a touch more pizzaz.

Judgement: 11/10 for stunning emeralds and iconic Bulgari perfection.

When There’s No Succession Plan, Call Wilkerson

Bob Wesley, owner of Robert C. Wesley Jewelers in Scottsdale, Ariz., was a third-generation jeweler. When it was time to enjoy life on the other side of the counter, he weighed his options. His lease was nearing renewal time and with no succession plan, he decided it was time to call Wilkerson. There was plenty of inventory to sell and at first, says Wesley, he thought he might try to manage a sale himself. But he’s glad he didn’t. “There’s no way I could have done this as well as Wilkerson,” he says. Wilkerson took responsibility for the entire event, with every detail — from advertising to accounting — done, dusted and managed by the Wilkerson team. “It’s the complete package,” he says of the Wilkerson method of helping jewelers to easily go on to the next phase of their lives. “There’s no way any retailer can duplicate what they’ve done.”
