Marks & Spencer, the venerable London department store (founded 1864), tops the retail category in the “World’s Most Trustworthy Companies” roster of 1000 businesses compiled by Newsweek and data research firm Statista.

To create this list, the partners surveyed more than 70,000 participants, gathering 269,000 evaluations of companies that people trust as a customer, as an investor and as an employee. Consumers evaluated companies on statements such as, “I trust in this company to treat me fairly as its customer,” “I trust that this company is competently led” and “I believe this company treats its employees fairly.”

Here are the top 10 retailers on the roster:

  1. M&S, department store, UK
  2. John Lewis Partnership, department stores, supermarkets, UK
  3. Canadian Tire Corp., department stores, Canada
  4. Shinsegae, department stores, South Korea
  5. Amazon, online retailer, USA
  6. Woolworths Group, department stores, supermarkets, Australia
  7. Chewy, online pet retailer, USA
  8. zooplus, online pet retailer, Germany
  9. Komputronik, home appliance retailer, Poland
  10. Coles Group, supermarkets, Australia

“We hope you find our rankings helpful and informative as you shop, invest and look for a new job,” Newsweek Global Editor in Chief Nancy Cooper wrote in the introduction to the survey’s results.

This Third-Generation Jeweler Was Ready for Retirement. He Called Wilkerson

Retirement is never easy, especially when it means the end to a business that was founded in 1884. But for Laura and Sam Sipe, it was time to put their own needs first. They decided to close J.C. Sipe Jewelers, one of Indianapolis’ most trusted names in fine jewelry, and call Wilkerson. “Laura and I decided the conditions were right,” says Sam. Wilkerson handled every detail in their going-out-of-business sale, from marketing to manning the sales floor. “The main goal was to sell our existing inventory that’s all paid for and turn that into cash for our retirement,” says Sam. “It’s been very, very productive.” Would they recommend Wilkerson to other jewelers who want to enjoy their golden years? Absolutely! “Call Wilkerson,” says Laura. “They can help you achieve your goals so you’ll be able to move into retirement comfortably.”
