It’s the third time in three months that a similar incident was reported in Manhattan’s Diamond District.
Eva Ho, a tourist who was visiting New York City from Hong Kong, has sued the Design by Gems jewelry store in Manhattan’s Diamond District for allegedly selling her almost $1 million worth of fake jewelry, the New York Post reports. Citing the lawsuit, the article says that Ho purchased three pieces of fake ruby-encrusted jewelry, and each piece came with a purported certificate of authenticity from the American Gemological Laboratories stating the rubies were “genuine Burmese stones.”
Ho, the article explains, later discovered that the pieces were “valueless composites” after AGL’s president confirmed that the certificates were fabricated. The AGL then inspected one of the pieces and determined that it was not of Burmese origin and “not free from heat treatment, as was falsely stated in the fabricated AGL certificate,” Ho’s attorney told the Post.
This is the third scam in three months that was reported from customers who say they were duped by jewelers in Manhattan’s Diamond District, the article adds.
