The sighting: Selena Gomez attended the VMAs in a dramatic red gown accessorized with Pasquale Bruni floral jewelry. It’s magnificent and we must discuss!

The jewels: Gomez is wearing an assortment of floral jewels from Pasquale Bruni’s Giardini Segreti & Petit Garden collections. The full lineup appears to be three rings, a bracelet, and earrings from two different earring pairs, all in diamonds and 18K white gold.

This is based on my research, not stylist confirmation, but the specific pieces appear to be: this $32,000 Giardini Segreti bracelet, one of these $27,850 Giardini Segreti earrings, one of these $42,700 Giardini Segreti earrings, this $14,150 Giardini Segreti ring, this $21,200 Giardini Segreti ring, this $27,350 Giardini Segreti ring, and this $6,740 Petit Garden ring.

The trends: Florals are pretty popular at the moment, but this bold, asymmetrical take on the theme feels like a sophisticated elevation of the trend.

Besides the motif, the choice of large earrings paired with several rings and a bracelet fits current red carpet trends of adorning the ears and extremities while leaving the neck bare. Add to that the growing resurgence of white metals, and this look could not be more on trend.

What do we think? It can be tricky for former child stars to nail the tone of their “I’m a real adult now” fashion sense, but Selena Gomez is doing it with aplomb. Foliate jewelry with a vaguely floral, vibrantly red and revealing gown could have come off as overly on-the-nose or excessively dramatic, but the large, simple design of the petals and the unexpectedness of the earrings’ asymmetry keeps this feeling fabulously fresh and incredibly chic.

On a personal note, I’ve had the pleasure of trying on pieces from Pasquale Bruni’s Giardini Segreti collection in the past and I’ve always been very impressed by how obviously well made they are. This is a very classy jewelry choice.

Judgement: 17/10 for a brilliantly curated jewelry moment.

When There’s No Succession Plan, Call Wilkerson

Bob Wesley, owner of Robert C. Wesley Jewelers in Scottsdale, Ariz., was a third-generation jeweler. When it was time to enjoy life on the other side of the counter, he weighed his options. His lease was nearing renewal time and with no succession plan, he decided it was time to call Wilkerson. There was plenty of inventory to sell and at first, says Wesley, he thought he might try to manage a sale himself. But he’s glad he didn’t. “There’s no way I could have done this as well as Wilkerson,” he says. Wilkerson took responsibility for the entire event, with every detail — from advertising to accounting — done, dusted and managed by the Wilkerson team. “It’s the complete package,” he says of the Wilkerson method of helping jewelers to easily go on to the next phase of their lives. “There’s no way any retailer can duplicate what they’ve done.”
