KATE BECKINSALE HAS been known to wear both independent designers and renowned brands.

At the AmFar Venetia Gala, she upped the trend for heart jewelry when she wore a Chopard Temptations ring with a 47.81-carat purple tourmaline and 7.16-carats of diamonds in 18k rose gold. The look made my own heart skip a beat! It was an elevated take on the ever- evolving heart in a variety of styles, but this one was of a rare size.

Both hearts and tourmalines have been popular for some time, and the ring that Beckinsale wore was jaw- droppingly bold and beautiful. It made the case for anyone who still thought of hearts as ditzy or girly. Many of the heart-shaped gemstones we are seeing at the designer level are one-of-a-kind or limited-edition, as the cut or color might be a little different for each one. Hearts are showing up in all classifications of jewelry, but rings seems to be particularly sought-after at the moment.

Beckinsale’s ring will hopefully rev up holiday sales for gifting from the heart. Or, for customers purchasing to wear on their own, an independent designer version will evoke the feeling of self-love.

We have also seen wonderful versions in tsavorite, rhodolite garnet, spinel and lavender sapphires, among other gemstones, so there are myriad ways to craft this look.

You can find beautiful versions from Retrouvai, Auroro, Nadine Aysoy and a host of other designers.

When There’s No Succession Plan, Call Wilkerson

Bob Wesley, owner of Robert C. Wesley Jewelers in Scottsdale, Ariz., was a third-generation jeweler. When it was time to enjoy life on the other side of the counter, he weighed his options. His lease was nearing renewal time and with no succession plan, he decided it was time to call Wilkerson. There was plenty of inventory to sell and at first, says Wesley, he thought he might try to manage a sale himself. But he’s glad he didn’t. “There’s no way I could have done this as well as Wilkerson,” he says. Wilkerson took responsibility for the entire event, with every detail — from advertising to accounting — done, dusted and managed by the Wilkerson team. “It’s the complete package,” he says of the Wilkerson method of helping jewelers to easily go on to the next phase of their lives. “There’s no way any retailer can duplicate what they’ve done.”
