An international research group led by scientists from the Swiss Gemmological Institute and the University of Zurich’s Institute of Forensic Medicine has reported a breakthrough in precious coral jewelry traceability. The technique hinges on a forensically validated genetic technique called Coral-ID.

The GIA has announced that its lab will soon stop issuing paper grading reports, switching to a digital approach. GIA-graded diamonds will now be returned with a QR code. To access the report, download GIA’s new app and scan the QR code or enter the inscription number into GIA’s online Report Check feature.

For nearly three decades, Suzanne and Tom Arnold ran a successful business at Facets Fine Jewelry in Arlington, Va.
