The sighting: The recent series finale of HBO’s hit show Insecure showed lead character Issa Dee returning home to a scene of domestic bliss with her on-again, off-again beau, Lawrence, and his adorable son. Issa places her hand on Lawrence’s chest for a tender moment and the camera briefly has full view of a gorgeous engagement ring on her finger!

Judge the Jewels: Did You Spot the Engagement Ring in the Final Episode of HBO’s Insecure? The jewels: We only get a glimpse, but the ring on Issa’s finger is rose gold with a square or rectangular center diamond and thick shoulders with above-average finger coverage.

According to a POPSUGAR article, LA-based jewelry designer Grace Lee speculates that Issa Dee’s ring has an asscher, emerald or oval center diamond and is worth around $15,000. NYC jewelry designer Ashley Zhang thinks the ring is a cushion cut stone in a diamond halo and worth up to $25,000.

Insecure show creator and lead actress Issa Rae (not to be confused with her character, Issa Dee) does have an engagement ring with a similar silhouette. Rae’s IRL ring appears to be platinum, with a split shank design giving its shoulders width and a cushion-cut center stone in a halo of smaller stones. Perhaps the character’s ring was inspired by her own?

The trends: The reason I love this ring so much for this character is that it defies major celebrity engagement ring trends. It’s not a giant solitaire on a tiny pavé band or a pretty but unimaginative three stone. It’s a ring with charisma and presence, as striking and distinctive as the character whose hand it graces.

What do we think? The Insecure costumes are immaculate, with colorful, exciting, fashion-forward styles perfectly tailored to each character, so it is no surprise they nailed this ring. Lawrence and Issa have come a long way since their first awkward trip to browse engagement rings at a mall, and the design of the final episode’s ring reflects that growth.

Judgement: 14/10 for the ring, 7/10 for the man (I’m still not convinced that Lawrence is right for Issa!)
