EVER WONDER WHERE your finely shaped calves came from? According to the 2021 INSTORE Big Survey, jewelers are truly walking the walk: about one in three clock an average of 5 miles or more a day as they do the rounds of their store. To be sure, there were less active jewelers. Sixteen percent of the respondents to our survey cover little more than a mile a day.

Our data was based on jewelers who wear trackers like a Fitbit or an Apple Watch and a typical person’s stride length of 2.1 to 2.5 feet. That means it takes over 2,000 steps to walk one mile and 10,000 steps would be almost 5 miles.

While there is debate over the optimum number of steps to aim for a day – recent studies suggest the gains top out at about 8,000 steps — the basic rule remains, physical activity has great health benefits. That suggests almost half of our jewelers should be trying to move around a bit more during the day, assuming they are not getting exercise outside of work.

Ready to Relocate? Wilkerson Makes Your Move Seamless

When Brockhaus Jewelry decided to leave their longtime West Main Street storefront for a standalone building elsewhere in Norman, Oklahoma, owners John Brockhaus and Brad Shipman faced a familiar challenge: how to efficiently reduce inventory before the big move. Their solution? Partnering with liquidation specialists Wilkerson for a second time. "We'd already experienced Wilkerson's professionalism during a previous sale," Shipman recalls. "But their approach to our relocation event truly impressed us. They strategically prioritized our existing pieces while tactfully introducing complementary merchandise as inventory levels decreased." The carefully orchestrated sale didn't just meet targets—it shattered them. Asked if they'd endorse Wilkerson to industry colleagues planning similar transitions—whether relocating, retiring, or refreshing their space—both partners were emphatic in their approval. "The entire process was remarkably straightforward," Shipman notes. "Wilkerson delivered a well-structured program, paired us with a knowledgeable advisor, and managed every detail flawlessly from concept to completion."
